Ballon Rouge started as a nomadic gallery in September 2017. In its first two years they organised exhibitions in Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, Brussels, Sao Paulo, Paris and New York. Each of the cities they visited was led by a 'collective member', a curator who introduced the artists and the art scene in their respective city. 

In March 2019 they made Brussels their home city, inaugurating their permanent space.  Although they continue to exhibit abroad together with their collective members, their main location is now Brussels. In addition to their own exhibitions, the Brussels space sometimes hosts invited international galleries to exhibit with them in exchange for a show of theirs in theirs.
