"DONDE NADA OCURRE"
The artist Irene de Andrés will present an individual project at Sa Punta des Molí as part of the OFF CAN Contemporary Art Now program. This initiative, since 2022, has promoted the artistic dissemination of Balearic artists by organizing exhibitions in venues across the Pityusic Islands, primarily between Formentera and Ibiza.
Irene de Andrés' work focuses on the evolution of leisure and the meaning of travel throughout history, especially in the 18th century when the sea became an object of desire and modern tourism emerged. De Andrés explores architectures and infrastructures such as spas and cruises through filmic, sculptural, and graphic pieces, connecting historical events and reflecting on tourist consumption and our relationship with the landscape.
"Donde nada ocurre" (Where Nothing Happens) is a project in which the artist has collected the memory of abandoned or temporarily unused nightclubs and party venues in Ibiza, her homeland. Each of these spaces is a different type of ruin and within the project, they function autonomously with specific pieces for the chosen locations: Festival Club, Idea, Heaven, Toro Mar, and Glory’s.
It is a reflection on the relationships between tourism and popular culture based on the history of club culture that flourished so vigorously on the island of Ibiza since the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition consists of five videos and a significant set of photographs, sculptures, models, and documentary material.
Graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid in 2009, she also completed a Master's in Artistic Research and Production. She has been a resident in programs such as FLORA Ars+Natura in Bogotá and The Harbor in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has received awards such as Generaciones from the Fundación Montemadrid and the Acquisition Prize at Estampa Fair from the Community of Madrid.
Her most notable solo exhibitions have taken place at the Centro Párraga in Murcia, the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, and the Espai 13 at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Her work has also been exhibited in group shows at institutions such as the TEA in Tenerife, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago de Chile, and the MuHKA in Antwerp.
For the second consecutive year, the Balearic tourism company Paya Hotels reaffirms its strong commitment to Balearic artistic creation and to strengthening and increasing the visibility of this sector through its support of the OFF CAN 2024 program. This program not only promotes Balearic talent but also seeks to connect Ibiza and Formentera through art.
