Fukumoto

Kenichiro Fukumoto was born in 1986 in Hiroshima, Japan, and received his MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014. He currently lives and work in Tokyo. His major exhibitions include “Vessels and Fragments of the Earth” (SFT gallery, The National Art Center, Tokyo, 2020), Yanbaru Art Festival (Okinawa, 2019), “3331 Art Fair” (Blum&Poe, Tokyo, 2019), “‘Scenery Poem’ Kenichiro Fukumoto & Stephen Wong” (Project Fulfill Art Space, Taipei, 2017), and “After images…” (iPreciation, Singapore, 2017). Fukumoto draws inspiration from the colors and shapes found in natural history encyclopedias from all ages and cultures, tapestries of various ethnicities, microorganisms in the soil and ocean, and the plants in his surroundings, creating works that consider the relationship between nature and the creations of humankind that has persisted since prehistoric times. In recent years, he has created works that combine different materials and textures, such as paintings using recycled wastepaper, Japanese traditional handmade paper, and old books, as well as three-dimensional works comprising of driftwood, repurposed timber, and ceramics that he kneaded and fired himself. Natural and humanmade objects coalesce in his works which appear to shift back and forth amidst the realms of the abstract and figurative, presenting a dialogue of sorts between human beings and nature.
