José Fiol's work is essentially based on reworking found photographic images and the stories that accompany them. Although the motifs depicted are often easily recognizable, there is a certain complexity throughout his work. A hermetic quality that points to a multi-layered artistic practice under which a torrent of references are interwoven to undermine any attempt at linear reading. By decontextualizing, cutting and altering the original material, Fiol deploys conceptual strategies that allow him to investigate the processes of meaning-making and our relationship with reality.

José Fiol has been awarded the "Institut d ́estudis Balearics" creation grant (2022), the "X Premio Vila de Santanyí Francisco Bernareggi de artes visuales" Award, the "Ajuntament de Palma y Fundación Joan Miró" creation and research grant, the "Institut d ́Estudis Balearics" creation grant (2020), the residency at "White Box Art Center. Beijing" (2018) and the awards "Can Felipa Arts Visuals. Barcelona" and "VIII Certamen Artes Plásticas Dijous Bo. Inca" (2017).
