Vasmoulakis

Alexandros Vasmoulakis (b. 1980) is an artist based in Athens, Greece. He is renowned for his captivating blend of influences from the Transcendental Painting Group, sand mandalas, and the subcultural aesthetics of rave, resulting in colourful, almost explosive murals and bold canvases. His work juxtaposes handmade wallpaper installations with paintings on canvas and board, and combines them with debris from monumental carnival sculptures creating an aggregate that engages with the discourse on the fluidity of consciousness. Vasmoulakis work with oil as well as crayons, which he fabricates himself from beeswax remains gathered from monasteries. His process begins directly on the canvas, as he enters a sort of artistic flow. From it emerge bright paintings that some may mistake for pop abstractions, however upon a more thorough examination reveals forms that imbue his work with a descriptive and timeless quality. In this sense, he succeeds in transcending.

Vasmoulakis studied in the Athens School of Fine Arts and the UMPRUM Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He has held solo exhibitions at Hollis Taggart Gallery New York, Eins Gallery, Limassol, Cyprus; The Breeder Gallery, Athens, Le Basse Projects, Los Angeles and Gallery Nosco in London. His work has also been included in various group exhibitions, including Fondation Cartier, Paris; Antikenmuseum, Basel; Benaki Museum, Athens; and Bozar, Brussels, among others.
