“Dark Green Daze”
Dark Green Daze unfolds as an intimate rebellion against the sterile boundaries of traditional exhibition spaces. In a private residence nestled within San Rafael’s countryside, the domestic becomes gallery, the personal becomes public, and art reclaims its place within lived experience. This landmark presentation marks Chris “DAZE” Ellis’s first appearance in Ibiza; a homecoming of sorts for an artist whose work has always existed in the margins, in the spaces between permission and transgression.
Since the late 1970s, DAZE has navigated the evolution from New York’s subway tunnels to museum walls, his visual language remaining consistently kinetic, colorful, and profoundly human. The transition from freight train to canvas mirrors a broader cultural shift — the legitimization of street art, the institutionalization of rebellion. Yet here, in the Balearic quiet of San Rafael, his work returns to something more primal: art as extension of living space, creativity as daily practice.
The exhibition presents twenty original canvas works alongside large-scale installations and an exclusive homeware line, including limited ceramic editions. These objects exist not as isolated art pieces but as integrated elements of domestic life — challenging viewers to consider how art functions when removed from the white cube, when experienced alongside morning coffee or evening conversation. The works pulse with DAZE’s signature energy while absorbing the Mediterranean light, the island’s particular quality of time suspended.
Curated by Michael Doohan of Dark Green Studios, the presentation reflects a decade of friendship and shared conviction that art’s power lies not in its distance from life but in its integration with it. Dark Green Studios operates on the principle that accessibility need not compromise sophistication — that breaking down barriers can create more meaningful encounters rather than diminished ones.
Chris “DAZE” Ellis (born 1962, New York City) began painting subway cars in 1976 while attending The High School of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent collections including MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Museum of the City of New York. He continues to live and work in New York City.
